False Cape State Park

Thing To Do False Cape State Park

Just a short drive or bike ride south of Sandbridge Beach lies one of Virginia’s most serene and unspoiled natural treasures: False Cape State Park. Known for its sweeping dunes, undeveloped stretch of beaches, and diverse habitats, False Cape offers visitors a rare opportunity to experience the Atlantic Coast in its most natural state — far from the crowds and traffic of more developed shorelines.

Where It's Located

False Cape State Park is located at the southern end of Sandbridge Beach, between the Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge and the North Carolina border.

The park stretches over 4,500 acres and includes more than 12 miles of undeveloped beaches, maritime forests, freshwater marshes, and dune plains.

False Cape State Park is just minutes from Sandbridge, yet it feels like a world apart!

How to Get to False Cape State Park

Because False Cape is intentionally kept undeveloped to preserve its natural character, there is no direct vehicle access from Sandbridge Beach. Visitors typically reach the park in one of three ways:

1. The Tram from Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge
The most common and easiest way to visit is via the False Cape State Park Tram. The tram departs from the Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge and offers a scenic ride through marshes and forest to the park’s interior. Note: All tram tours require a reservation.

2. Bike Access
For the adventurous at heart, you can bike into the park along sandy paths and beachside trails. This is a great option for experienced riders and offers freedom to explore at your own pace.

3. Hike In
If you love to walk, plan for a 2–5-mile hike depending on where you start. Bring plenty of water, sturdy footwear, and sun protection — the natural terrain can be rugged.

What to Do at False Cape State Park

Wildlife Watching

The park’s varied habitats are home to deer, foxes, otters, osprey, herons, and countless migratory birds. Bring binoculars and take your time — you’re likely to spot wildlife in its natural environment.

Hiking Trails

There are several inland trails that take you through maritime forests, freshwater marshes, and dunes. The North Creek Trail and Seaside Trail are favorites for scenic walks.

Biking Adventures

The sandy paths and designated bike routes provide a unique coastal biking experience for confident riders. Just be prepared for soft sand and varying terrain. Extra fat tires or bikes known as a "fat bike" are especially handy when riding on sand.

Photography & Sunset Views

From sweeping ocean views to intimate nature scenes, False Cape’s scenery is a photographer’s dream. The sunsets over this undeveloped part of the coastline are especially breathtaking.

Tips for Visiting

  • Pack essentials: water, snacks, sunscreen, and insect repellent — amenities are limited.
  • Plan for shade: much of the park is exposed, so a hat and sun protection are key.
  • Respect wildlife: observe from a distance and leave no trace.
  • Check the tram schedule: if you’re taking the shuttle, review times before you go.
  • The park is open sunrise through sunset daily, and visitors must be out of the refuge within 30 minutes of sunset.
  • Bring a camera: you won’t want to forget these views!
