The last few months have been pretty rocky for everyone with the current Coronavirus pandemic. Some activities and attractions are limited and some places are closed entirely. Here at Sandbridge Blue we want to ensure that you have a safe and wonderful vacation that you can remember for many years to come! Here are a few activities we have compiled that are safer for you and your family to enjoy.
1. Go Kayaking or Paddle Boarding
Kayaking and paddle boarding are a great way to experience nature in Sandbridge Beach with a fresh point of view. From the calmer waters of Back Bay to the mighty waves of the Atlantic these can be activities for all skill levels, and fun for the whole family. Not only does it give you an opportunity to explore nature, but what better way to practice social distancing?! Not to mention it’s a great workout!
2. Go Fishing
Sandbridge Beach gives anglers the opportunity to catch many species of fish, both fresh, and saltwater. From the tiny bluegill to the mighty bluefin tuna, the opportunities are limitless. If pier fishing is your style you can visit Little Island Pier that juts out 400 feet into the Atlantic. On the pier you can catch many of species of fish from spring through the fall such as flounder, mackerel, bluefish, spot, and croaker. If surf-fishing is your preference you can throw bottom rigs or lures in the surf for the chance to catch many species of fish as well. Freshwater fish also inhabit Back Bay if you are looking for bluegill, catfish, yellow perch, and largemouth bass. If you do not have the proper gear there are many local outfitters that can get you started on the right path! Currently fishing has been my GO TO coronavirus activity and we’ve also written an article Anglers Find Their Happy Place When Fishing at Sandbridge Beach, VA that goes into a bit more detail.
3. Go to the beach!
Obviously, this activity speaks for itself, but we had to list it! Sandbridge offers about 4.5 miles of beautiful beach! Surfing, fishing, swimming, kite flying, or just catching a tan are all great options! Pack your gear and hit the sand to fully appreciate the view! Don’t forget to follow proper social distancing guidelines and you’ve got a great day that everyone can enjoy.
4. Take a Hike!
Sandbridge beach boasts a massive amount of trails to explore. Back Bay Wildlife Refuge offers more than 8 miles of trails that are well maintained and only moderately strenuous. Raptor trail is a great, kid-friendly .4 mile trail that gives you an opportunity to see some of the larger birds of prey such as eagles, falcons, and hawks. If you want to walk more on the wild side we would advise looking into False Cape State Park. The park covers 4,321 undeveloped acres and offers many family and dog-friendly trails. Don’t forget to bring your camera for some amazing photos. If this is something you really want to do we’ve wrote Top Walking & Hiking Nature Trails in Sandbridge, VA just for you! While the visitor center and indoor restrooms are currently closed, there are portable restrooms currently for the public’s use.
5. Lounge Beside The Pool
What better way to spend the day than lounge beside or in the pool? We have many vacation rentals with pools available so you can practice social distancing like a BOSS and work on your tan!
6. Bird Watching
This can also be done while you’re enjoying the beautiful trails but there are countless species of birds that you can see in and around Sandbridge Beach. Common swallows, ducks, geese, eagles, hawks and my personal favorite, the osprey are just the tip of the iceberg. As of this writing there were currently doves, egrets, herons, ospreys and many other birds spotted just in the last day! You can keep up with the current sightings and locations by using the Back Bay eBird Trail Tracker. Grab a pair of binoculars, a camera, and get out there and check out some of those amazing animals!
7. Work On Your Photography Skills
One of the thoughts I always try to keep in the back of my mind is that you cannot have light without the dark. While we may be collectively experiencing a dark time, we cannot forget to focus on the beauty around us. Sandbridge beach is brimming with opportunities for beautiful photos. Sunrises, sunsets, wildlife, the ocean, and the people around you all offer great opportunities to take photos that will last a lifetime and beyond. We’ve also compiled a list of Top 7 Photo Ops At Sandbridge Beach to get you started.
